US biofuel startups drew a sharp increase in investor attention in early 2026, with equity funding rising 556 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier, according to data from market tracker Tracxn. The surge has placed the United States at the centre of a global clean fuel investment cycle, with cumulative sector funding crossing $1bn.

Infinium leads individual company rankings, having raised $69m as of April. Capital is arriving at the scale needed to move projects from trial runs to full commercial production.

The policy driver is clear. The Environmental Protection Agency finalised its Renewable Fuel Standard "Set 2" rule in March 2026, establishing the highest blending volume mandates in the programme's 20-year history. Biodiesel and renewable diesel output must grow by more than 60 per cent against 2025 levels. From 2028, foreign-sourced feedstocks will receive only half the compliance credit of domestic inputs, sharpening the advantage for US producers.

Sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel, and biomass-based diesel are drawing the largest share of new money. Airlines, logistics operators, and fuel distributors are securing long-term supply agreements, giving producers the revenue certainty needed to arrange project financing. Midwest farming communities, anchored by corn and soybean supply chains, stand to benefit as new facilities break ground.

Risks remain. Feedstock price swings, potential soybean oil shortages, and uncertainty around the 45Z Clean Fuel Production Tax Credit are factors investors continue to weigh. A rapid build-out across overlapping production categories could also compress margins if supply outruns regulated demand.

Whether incentive structures hold, and whether early-stage capacity can be absorbed without a price correction in specific fuel categories, will shape how durable this investment wave proves to be.
