America’s ethanol industry just finished its most productive year in history. In 2025, domestic producers churned out 16.4 billion gallons of renewable fuel, fueled by high demand and a restless global market. Exports jumped to an all-time high of 2.2 billion gallons, worth $4.8 billion. This represents a 13 percent volume increase over the previous year, confirming that the world has a growing appetite for American biofuels.

The impact of these numbers is felt most acutely in the rural heartland. The sector added $50 billion to the national GDP and supported over 300,000 jobs last year. Farmers received $24 billion for the corn and sorghum used to power these plants. This provided a vital lifeline for agricultural communities facing their toughest financial stretch in decades. Even as the broader agricultural trade balance struggled, ethanol delivered a solid trade surplus of $4.55 billion.

Global markets are now the industry's primary frontier. Roughly one in every eight gallons produced last year was shipped overseas to customers in Asia and Latin America. According to Growth Energy, the total value of these shipments reached a record $4.8 billion. This overseas expansion is no longer a side project for the industry but a central pillar of its business model.

Policy changes could further accelerate this momentum in 2026. The EPA is considering its highest-ever renewable volume targets, which would provide a reliable floor for domestic production. Industry leaders are also pushing for nationwide, year-round access to E15 fuel. New federal tax credits are expected to trigger fresh investment once the final rules are settled.

The industry is looking beyond the gas station to find its next big win. Executives at the recent National Ethanol Conference highlighted maritime shipping and sustainable aviation fuel as the next logical steps. These sectors are desperate for scalable, low-carbon solutions that can be deployed today. With production records shattered and exports booming, the American biofuel sector is entering the new year with a sense of clear, aggressive ambition.
