Montana’s Billion-Dollar Bet on Cleaner Aviation

Montana Renewables secures major funding, boosting US’ sustainable aviation fuel goals

Montana is betting big that sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is the ticket to cleaner skies, and with a $1.44 billion loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy, it just might pay off.

Montana Renewables is transforming its refinery in Great Falls into a giant of green aviation fuel, set to produce 300 million gallons of SAF and 330 million gallons of renewable diesel every year. That puts the U.S. squarely on track to hit President Biden’s goal of generating 3 billion gallons of SAF annually by 2030.

SAF, crafted from recycled cooking oils, animal fats, and other organic waste, slashes aviation emissions dramatically, potentially cutting emissions by up to 80 percent compared to traditional jet fuels. For years, SAF was seen as promising but impractical, stuck in pilot projects and small-scale experiments. Now, bolstered by breakthroughs in technology and robust federal backing, it’s finally ready to fly.

Airlines face growing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, yet SAF supply has struggled to keep pace. Montana’s refinery expansion marks a significant turning point, signaling the U.S. is serious about leading the global charge for greener skies.

Federal incentives, such as tax credits and carbon-cutting programs, have played a critical role in making SAF financially viable. Montana Renewables strategically uses waste-based inputs, sidestepping the contentious food-versus-fuel debate while maintaining sustainability at its core.

Still, hurdles exist. Airport infrastructure requires costly upgrades to handle SAF, and ensuring a steady, large-scale supply of renewable feedstocks remains challenging.

But optimism outweighs obstacles. Montana isn’t merely refining fuel; it’s fueling optimism that sustainable aviation is within reach. If Montana’s gamble succeeds, it could ignite a nationwide boom in SAF production, dramatically reshaping aviation’s environmental footprint.

The skies are changing, and Montana just might be where clean aviation truly takes flight.
